I recently read The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling and was surprised at how different the story is compared to the movie.
The Jungle Book is one of my favourite Disney movies, I love the story and all the singing and dancing, but I never realised how altered the movie is. For instance in the movie Mowgli leaves the jungle at the end of the movie to live with fellow humans. However in the book Mowgli was brought to the human camp in the beginning and stayed there for a while until he was thrown out, after been accused of being a sorcerer because he could talk to the animals. There were so many changes like this, such as Shere Khan being killed off half way though the book ! I think the only part of the book that was incorporated into the movie without being altered was when Mowgli was taken by the monkeys.
I still liked the book; it was action packed and darker than the movie. Disney definitely adapted it into the happy loveable story that we all know it to be, because the book had a colder feeling to it. Mowgli, Baloo and Bagheeras friendship was also different in the book, they were his teachers more than his friends and they didn’t have that warm glow to them that is in the movie. It was quite a strange experience; almost like peeling off a filter to a childhood movie and seeing a much different story or discovering a favourite fairy tale has a dark meaning you don’t understand as a child.
Overall I enjoyed the book but I was definitely shocked by how truly different the book is to the movie. I found it interesting to see what Disney deemed child friendly, how they changed characters relationships, gave a happy ending and what they left out, which was most of it. But I am glad I read it and I really want to watch the movie again soon.

I generally prefer the book to its movie. The exception I can think of is Lord of the Rings (my husband disagrees and makes similar points to the ones you made here – in other words, the movie/s don’t match the book/s) In the case of LoTR, I prefer the movies because many place-names and character-names are similar, so I frequently needed to go back and verify who/where, whereas it was easy to differentiate in the movies.
